Reasons to Smile

The bubbles that grow as bread dough ferments
The scent of sagebrush when summer drought breaks
A steelhead’s pull on the thousandth cast
Our last whispered words when the lights go out

The vespertine white of a trumpet flower
The trombone solo in Night and Day
I’ve Got You Under My Skin and Cole Porter rhymes
The beautiful lines of your neck

The tectonic faults you let me keep
The golden beeches on winter trails
Our breath that veils the frozen stars
Those first whispered words when the rooster crows
