Sunflowers (Avocet; Summer, 2016)

Authors: Rob Jackson

Sunflowers

A field of yellow sunflowers gently swaying,

Left and right, they gladly greet their neighbor.

I hear them whisper, wonder what they’re saying,

Of rain and soil, of sun and growing labor.

Do they remember frost and snowy covers,

The whip of winds, the rows of comrades fallen?

Or is their chatter light, of spring and lovers,

Of birds and bees, of pistils gold with pollen?

I pull one close, its secrets to empower,

Discover disks and rays that coexist,

A hundred tiny flowers in a flower

That paint each sunlit face in pointillist.

So close that quiet nights with no breeze blowing,

I bet they whisper on with no one knowing.
